Parenting FAILS

I feel like overall we are doing a pretty good job at this whole parenting thing. However, there are a few noteworthy mishaps that I want to remember.

First, Malcolm was laying in bed with her (looking at twitter I am sure) when all of a sudden her little hand grabbed for the phone. She knocked it out of his hand and it landed with a big thud right on her cute little forhead. Malcolm looked completely horrified and Gracyn let out the most heartbreaking cry ever. All day I thought it was hilarious to make fun of Malcolm about the incident. She would act up and I would make a comment like, "maybe she is concussed." This was all fun until the next incident happened.

About a week later I was laying in bed with Gracyn next to me. She had finally gone back to sleep after about an hour of hanging out. She loves to do this around 5 am. It's awesome. All of a sudden my stupid alarm clock goes off. I was frantically grabbing for it on my night stand to turn it off before it woke her up. Well in the process of reaching over Gracyn to grab the phone it fell out of my hand. Yup. Landing RIGHT ON HER FOREHEAD. She let out another heartbreaking cry. I totally thought Malcolm was asleep when all of a sudden I heard, "What just happened? Did you just drop your cell phone on her head?" I could not believe I did that to my precious baby. I just looked at him and said, "She is going to get taken away from us." The rest of the day wasn't much fun while malcolm got his payback.

A few weeks after that I had just got done feeding Gracyn at about 2:30 am. I layed her on a pillow in front of me. She was in the best mood. She was smiling and talking to me. I remember thinking to myself, "This kid freaking loves me!" That was short lived. I went to grab my water that was on the night stand. Probably around 32 oz of water to exact. I took a break from basking in my mom glory to take a drink. That was when tragedy stuck. It slipped out of my hand and spilled ALL OVER Gracyn. I shrieked and woke Malcolm up. Gracyn is looking at me like, "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!" It totally took her breath away and then she started screaming. Water is everywhere. All over her. All over me. All over the bed. EVERYWHERE. I quickly changed Gracyn and then got new PJ's for myself. Malcolm volunteered to go sleep in the guest room so I could sleep on his dry side of the bed. I remember as he grabbed his pillow and was heading to the guest bedroom he said again, "She really is going to get taken away from us."

Gracyn's Birth Story

The story of Gracyn's birth was a pretty crazy. I was 37 weeks and 3 days pregnant and so happy we had made it that far after the complications. It all started in the early morning hours on Feb 3. Around 5AM I woke up with a stomachache. I was pretty sure my stomach was hurting from dinner the night before. We had gone out with friends and I had a ridiculously big steak. I woke Malcolm up and asked him if his stomach hurt from dinner. He told me he felt fine and I tried to go back to sleep.

Around 7AM I realized that my stomach was getting stomach pain pretty consistently every 10 minutes. At this point it finally dawned on me that these were contractions. I woke Malcolm up and he started timing them. My parents were out here for the weekend so around 8AM I woke up my mom and told her what was going on. My doctor had told me to wait and come in when my contractions were about 5 minutes apart. During this time Malcolm was still in denial I was in labor. He kept saying, "I just really don't feel like today is the day." I think that was wishful thinking on his part because it was super bowl Sunday. He had jokingly said he a few weeks before that I better not have her on super bowl Sunday.

We waited and waited and finally around 10:30am the contractions started to get very painful. I joked with Malcolm that I was ready for my epidural. Around 11AM my contractions were only 7 minutes apart but I was starting to feel pressure and I told Malcolm we better go. I was so terrified they were going to turn me away because I wasn't going to be very far dilated. I told him, "If they send me home I will die! This hurts!"

We got to the hospital and Malcolm dropped me off in front while he went and parked. As I walked in the door I had a BAD contraction. I just braced myself against the door feeling a little stupid while everyone in the lobby looked at me. The lady at the front desk looked up and asked, "Do you need labor and delivery?"

They got us back into a room and checked me and I was dialated to a 6! Umm... What?! I never wanted to go that far without an epidural! Ooops! I got the epidural a short time later and after that I felt WONDERFUL. I kept saying over and over, "Why would anyone do this without an epidural?! This is great!" They came in at about 2PM and broke my water. After that things started to go pretty fast. I started pushing at 3PM.

About an hour into pushing Gracyn's heart rate crashed. All of a sudden there were a lot of people in the room and the doctor was telling me that they needed to get Gracyn out right away. The NICU team was brought in to take the baby once she was born. At this point I was terrified. Malcolm stayed very calm the entire time assuring me that everything was going to be okay. With assistance of the forceps it did not take long at all after that. Gracyn Layne Thacker was born at 3:14 pm. She was 6 lbs and 19 1/2 inches long. Right away she began to cry and it was the best sound I had ever heard in my life. I was so relieved. The NICU team was able to check her out in the room. She was perfectly healthy and they would not need to take her. The nurses kept commenting on how they couldn't believe how cute and alert she was. Her eyes were wide open and ready to explore the world.

They brought her over and layed her on my chest and I saw these two giant blue eyes staring up at me. I was instantly in love. I knew that from that moment forward I was forever changed. I would do anything for this little person. I couldn't believe that this beautiful little baby was mine. Malcolm just kept commenting on how beautiful she was. I don't know what we did to deserve this little angel but we are thankful for her everyday.

Pregnancy With Gracyn

These are some important things I want to remember about my pregnancy with Gracyn.

June 12, 2012-Today I found out that I am pregnant! I was in such shock and I took 3 tests to be absolutely sure. I went in to wake your dad and tell him the exciting news. He thought for sure I was waking him up to kill a spider. I have never seen your dad so happy as when I told him you were on the way. He hugged me and hugged me and offered to make me breakfast. He is going to be the best dad in whole world.

Aug 24, 2012-Today we found out that you are a little girl! Grandma Teri's friend Cody took an early look for us and she said that you are definitely a girl. I was shocked because I was pretty sure you were a boy. Your dad has said the entire time that you are a little girl. Your dad had the biggest smile on his face and looked and me with tears in his eyes. We are so happy to have a baby girl!

Oct 5, 2012-Today your dad felt you kick for the first time. I had felt you moving around for a while but that is the first time your dad had ever felt it. We were watching the BYU-USU game that night and Utah State had just a kicked a field goal so he was pretty sure you were giving him a high five. I hope you love football because it will take up the majority of our time during the fall.

Nov 10, 2012-Today was my baby shower. It was thrown by Aunt Jenny, Jacey and Jessica. Many people braved the terrible snow storm to come celebrate your arrival. Everyone already loves you so much and can't wait for you to get here.

Random Things

*You love it when your dad talks and sings to you. Your favorite songs are: Utah Man, the prius commercial song (weird) and Isn't She Lovely.  Every time I can't get you to move I have your dad sing to you and you start kicking like crazy. We joke that we don't know if you love it or hate it. You guys have "dance parties" every night.

*I am pretty sure you will love ovaltine. I have started out pretty much every morning of my pregnancy with a glass. I am afraid you will also like jalapeno/cream cheese tornadoes from 7-11, hot dog on a stick, cafe rio and pancakes. Sorry about that.

Christmas 2012

We spent in Salt Lake this year because I was on bedrest. It was pretty low key other than a midnight emergency room trip for poor Kaden who was super sick. We hung out and enjoyed our time together as a family. I was terrible about taking pictures but I did get a picture of Gracyn's presents. The girl made a haul and isn't even here yet. She is one loved baby!
